Wildcats fall by one goal in late rally to Binghamton Bearcats

The men’s lacrosse team let a five goal lead slide in the final period during a home game versus Binghamton University (3-0 on the season) on Saturday, March 11 in Villanova Stadium. The Wildcats (2-3 on the season) eventually fell to the undefeated Bearcats 7-6 in overtime.
Binghamton started off the scoring, but it was Villanova who dominated the first three periods of the game. The Wildcats saw six goals from an equal amount of scorers. Junior Mike Haas started the rush of goals for Villanova off of a pass from Tim Langan, Jr.
Unassisted goals from Garrett Hohendorf in the first period and freshman Mathew Fritts in the second period gave Villanova a two goal lead.
Langan posted his second assist of the game on junior Chris Mercer’s goal with 3:32 left in the second. Junior Andy German extended the lead to four with an unassisted tally late in the second period. Paul Genovese put the cap on the ‘Cats’ scoring 1:05 into the third period, bringing the score to 6-1.
Despite being down five goals with only a period left to play, Binghamton clawed back to life. The Bearcats scored five straight goals on thirteen shots, including two man-advantage goals. Binghamton’s Stephen Smith scored the game tying point with only twelve seconds left in the game.
Binghamton junior Jeff Santucci scored the game winning unassisted goal only 42 seconds into overtime, giving the Bearcats the victory.
Villanova goalie Joe Canuso had eleven saves in the game, marking his fourth straight game with 10 or more saves.
On Saturday, March 18 the ‘Cats travel to Moon Township, Pa. to take on Robert Morris in a 1:00 p.m. game.
