Roller coaster season rolls onward for softball ‘Cats

The Villanova softball team was riding high last week, courtesy of a four-game winning streak.

Unfortunately, a heart-breaking loss to Notre Dame set the tone for the week, as the ‘Cats would drop both series at Notre Dame and DePaul.

In game one of the series against Notre Dame, the Wildcats rallied from a 5-0 deficit to take a 7-5 lead into the bottom of the seventh. After a Kayla Felty single loaded the bases, three walks and a wild pitch, combined with timely hitting by Cassie Koenig, Natalie Hord and Megan Morese gave the Wildcats a two run lead.

A lead off home run in the next inning cut the lead to one, and Notre Dame would plate two more in the inning to win the game 8-7.

In game two, the ‘Cats were able to enter the fifth inning tied, but four runs in the bottom half of the inning and another in the sixth put Notre Dame ahead for good, 8-3.

The ‘Cats next traveled to Chicago to take on the Blue Demons of DePaul. In game one, a scoring explosion in the sixth inning put the Blue Demons up for good, as they shut out the ‘Cats to prevail, 8-0.

In game two, the Blue Demons jumped on the board early and often, holding a 7-0 advantage heading into the top of the fourth.

Villanova plated two runs on a home run by Koenig, but that’s all they would get, eventually falling 8-2.

The team’s next game, a double header against Lehigh, was postponed.

The ‘Cats next face off against Temple on Tuesday in a doubleheader at Philadelphia, Pa.
