For any athlete, there is no greater feeling than ending a season with new records, whether accomplished individually or by a team. However, finishing a college career on these terms is even better. For senior co-captains Brock Bergman and Steve Arnold, it seems this college athlete’s dream may become reality this season. After winning a Big 5 Classic title last year, the team hopes not only to repeat this triumph, but also to win the Big East Tournament and qualify for the NCAA Regionals in the spring.

As usual, the Big East competition will present challenges for Villanova, as it has become one of the most competitive conferences in the country.

“The new and improved Big East has truly changed the dynamic of golf in the conference,” Bergman said. “The new teams in the Big East are extremely competitive on a national level, and bring up the expectations of the conference as a whole. Coming off a fifth place finish in the Big East last year, we know we can compete with any team in the country.”

Led by head coaches (and brothers) Jake and Joe Moran, the team has shown its strength so far in its first tournament, finishing in sixth place at the Hawk’s Invitational this past weekend in Bolton, Mass. Sophomore Brett Bergman made an extremely strong showing, finishing eight overall with a three round score of 70-75-72 (+1) as well as team medalist honors.

For Brock, playing with his younger brother has been a pleasure. “Being able to compete on a daily basis in the summer has brought both of our games to a new level,” he said. “Neither one of us wants to ever lose to the other, yet we are always there for support and encouragement for one another. This being my senior year, it will truly be an amazing final season here at Villanova not only because the team has such great expectations, but because I will have the chance to play with my brother for one final year.”
