Season Recap: Golf
May 1, 2007
The golf team will compete in its last tournament of the season, the Rutherford Intercollegiate, this weekend to complete a successful season. This tournament will end the college careers of senior co-captains Steve Arnold and Brock Bergman. This season, Arnold and Bergman were both consistent scorers for the team, and their talent and leadership will be missed by coaches and team members alike. Arnold led the team in many of its tournaments this year with the lowest score average of the squad, while Bergman was also among Villanova’s top four golfers in numerous tournaments. At the Princeton Invitational in April, Bergman took medalist honors for the team when he shot rounds of 73-76. In the last round of the Big East championships last week, Arnold fired the only below-par round by a Villanova player when he carded a 71 (-1) to finish 19th overall and lead the team to a ninth-place finish. Several sophomores with outstanding potential were also significant contributors to the lineup this season. They included Doug Stadler, Brett Bergman, and Andrew Alexander, who are all bound to see even greater success in their coming seasons. Brothers Jake and Joe Moran, in their 14th season at Villanova, used their seniority and experience to lead the team to success. Although Arnold and Bergman will be sorely missed, the team possesses enough talent and depth to replace them and continue as a competitive force next season.
