The water polo team concluded its season this past weekend with matches against Marist and St. Francis on April 19 and against Siena and Iona on April 20. The Wildcats lost all four matches, but the three seniors on the team shined in their last collegiate games. Carla Martinez scored a total of 13 goals in the four games, Julie Ramaley contributed to the offense by scoring four goals throughout the weekend and goalie Erin Foley continued to do well in the net as she made eight saves against St. Francis.

The first game of the weekend was a 21-9 loss against the defending league regular-season champion Red Foxes of Marist. Martinez led the offense for the ‘Cats by scoring four goals in this game. Freshmen Maria Apablasa and Kathleen Maloney also pitched in by scoring three and two goals, respectively. For the first time all season, sophomore Andrea La Fevers was put in the net and made six saves.

In a score identical to the last meeting between the two teams on April 5, St. Francis beat Villanova 14-6. Although the Terriers only outshot the ‘Cats 20-17, St. Francis goalie Brandy Creek made saves on 11 of 17 Villanova shots to keep the game in her team’s hands. Martinez and Maloney each scored twice in this match, while Ramaley and Marissa Hermann each added one goal.

At Wagner on April 5, the team lost to Siena 15-9 and to Iona 15-7. Against Siena, Martinez scored four times, Apablasa added two goals and Ramaley and Maloney each contributed one. Against Iona, Martinez finished her stellar weekend with a hat trick. Ramaley gave a great effort in her last game as a Wildcat by scoring twice, and Apablasa and Maloney each had one goal.

The team’s season is now complete, ending its streak of five straight postseason appearances. The ‘Cats final record is 3-24 (0-10 MAAC). — J.A.
