Villavogue: The Return of 1960s and 1970s Fashion

Kaelin Trombly, Staff Writer

Despite the hardships and darkness faced throughout the 60s and 70s, beauty still bloomed through fashion. Among the Vietnam War effort and resounding anti-war protests, the assasination of John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., the masses delighted in joyful, colorful silhouettes. Perhaps the strain our world has gone through during the pandemic is reason enough for the groovy return of 60s and 70s fashion in summer 2021. So, for those who want to reminiscence on the youthful, energetic and colorful styles of the past, clear your closet, because the free-spirited fashion era has been granted a second life.

Oversized Frames. One booming 60s and 70s trend to look out for this summer is the extreme baggy silhouette. Achieving this style is very easy and only requires the pairing of baggy pants and an oversized top. This trend, along with cool suiting, emerged in the beginning of the 1970s as a form of rebellion against tradition and an embrace of androgynous dressing in support of the  LGBTQ+ movements. The oversized frame is represented across runways worldwide, with support from major houses like Dior and Orange Culture.

Circle Skirts. There’s something so fun and flirtatious about a full skirt. Whether they are layered with tulle, box-pleated, ruffled or paneled, circle skirts are voluminous from the hip bone down to the calf. This trend is conventionally feminine and beautifully dramatic. When styling this garment, stick to a top that is more form fitting since the skirt is full towards the bottom.

Size up on Sunglasses. The big, bold eyewear of the 60s and 70s is back. From retro-inspired tinted lenses to rectangle frames, statement sunglasses will easily complete any look. For more insight, check out Gucci, Tom Ford and Saint Laurent, who happen to be frontrunners of the trend revival.

Disco Collar. Worn outside of a suit jacket for an extra 70s flair, pointed-collars are sticking around for the summer months ahead. A favorite runway look representing the disco collar is Off-White’s mint blazer and floral blouse.

Wide-Leg Pants. Grab some wide-leg trousers that hug the waist and flare out from the hip. Enough said.

Crochet All Day. Knitting’s cousin, the technique of crocheting consists of weaving yarn into a patterned fabric. The textiles from crochet are bright and colorful, presenting a peaceful aura. From skirts and camisoles to hats and purses, any article of clothing can be created with this handcraft. Not to mention, it is quite easy to do oneself. Don’t be fooled that the crochet trend is listed last, because it may just be the biggest summer 2021 craze.

This summer, be prepared to hop in a time machine back to the 1960s and 1970s, because I have a feeling that a fresh assortment of pointed-collared oxfords and wide-leg trousers are about to add verve to your wardrobe. See you at the disco.
