Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams struggled this weekend, failing to pick up a victory in any of their matchups. The men competed in two events, while the women played their matchup against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

The men struggled against Old Dominion’s team and could only walk away with one match on Feb. 16 at the Folkes-Stevens Indoor Tennis Center. Freshmen Alex Leeser and David Shaheen were able to come away with a doubles victory against the Monarchs. However, the Wildcats lost all of their singles matches in straight sets.

The men also had a difficult time against the Penn Quakers. Freshman John Drosick was able to push his match into a third set at No. 6 singles, but he fell just short in the final set. The Wildcats were unable to come away with a win in either the singles or the doubles matches.

The women could not repeat last year’s win versus Rutgers and slipped to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in Big East Conference play on Feb. 15. The ‘Cats could not take more than two games in any individual set. They struggled especially in the three doubles matches, which they lost by scores of 8-1, 8-1 and 8-2.

Rutgers Head Coach Ben Bucca had a few words to say about his team’s victory.

“This was a great win for our team,” Bucca said in a report on the Scarlet Knights’ Web site. “Once again Villanova was a team that beat us last year, and with this convincing win, we have proven that this team has turned things around.”

The men will be back in action on Saturday against Army in West Point, N.Y., while the women will try to take a few matches against Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers, Fla., on March 2.
